Winner of both the Audience and the Editorial Awards for CitySearch 2006, Houston's Galleria Shopping Center, which opened in 2003 with more than 400 shops, is the fifth largest mall in the country. Book-ended by the haute couture boutiques like Chanel, Club Monaco, and Yves Saint Laurent, and man of the country's most popular franchises (Hot Topic, Pac Sun, the Gap), are a wide range of department stores such as Nordstrom, Macy's, and Sak's Fifth Avenue. But it's the shops unique to this shopping mall, however, along with an ice-skating rink, two hotels (the Westin Oaks and Westin Galleria), and 24 restaurants, that have made the Galleria the most popular shopping and tourist destination in Houston, with over 24 million annual visitors. Ala Moda, Brass Boot, Carroll Paris, De Gala, Grazia, Obecca, Sara Lasier, Velleriano Italy and many others are some of the boutiques you can only find at the Galleria.
If somehow you exhaust the possibilities at the Galleria, take a step outside and check out the neighborhood. The Uptown District features over 100 restaurants and more than five million square feet of retail space, rivaling Beverly Hills as the country's "go to" shopping destination. The shops are too numerous to mention, but since you can't visit Texas without bringing home a Stetson or a pair of hand-made cowboy boots, you'd be wise to check out the Uptown's Pinto Ranch on Post Oak Boulevard, the self-proclaimed shop that defines classic Western attire.
