Every June 19th Houstonians take the day off for statewide Juneteenth festivities. Juneteenth, otherwise known as the Emancipation Day In Texas, is a day officially recognized by many states as the day Union General Gordon Granger, backed by 2,000 federal troops, publicly proclaimed from nearby Galveston that the emancipation of American slaves would be enforced by a federal military presence. Juneteenth festivities include food and music celebrations held at various venues across Houston.
