Civil Rights Day
To help remember slain civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., on the third Monday of every January local citizens and visitors flock to Downtown Houston to celebrate progressive freedom with a civil rights parade. The parade -- complete with marching bands and a procession of elected city officials -- is just the beginning of the day-long civil rights celebration. Other celebration activities include organized marches, and public speeches and lectures by citizens both young and old held at various venues throughout the city.
