The Ensemble Theatre is the largest professional African-American theater in the Southwest and one of the few professional theaters in the region that is devoted to preserving the African-American experience. Founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins, The Ensemble is a non-profit organization that has matured from holding rehearsals in a church basement to producing plays in a sizable theater building with three stages. Located in midtown Houston near the Ensemble/HCC Station METRORail stop, this theater group presents spectacular dramas, comedies, and musicals to a diverse, multi-cultural audience. From modern adaptations of Shakespeare to reliving the Harlem Renaissance, artistic expression comes alive in ways never seen before. It also hosts two outstanding educational programs for young adults aspiring to become performance artists.
With over 30 years under its belt, the Ensemble Theatre is an outlet for fresh, influential voices such as Joseph A. Walker, Pearl Cleage, Cheryl L. West, and Shay Youngblood. Supported by 250 professional local, regional, and national artists, this theater remains one of Houston's most significant cultural institutions. The building itself features an intimate setting, glass lobby, and comfortable surroundings enjoyed by every audience member.
