Outdoor Sports
Houston is a bona fide metropolis with some of the finest attractions you'll find in any city, but the great outdoors are right around the bend. Touching the south end of Houston, the Greater Clear Lake area presents a wealth of fun activities to match the city's fine weather. Swimming, sailing, boating, jet skiing, camping, hiking, fishing, biking, kayaking and canoeing are just a handful of recreations Clear Lake offers. Open to everyone, the Clear Lake Sailing Club holds daily sailing and instruction courses. And with 19 marinas and over 7,000 boat slips, the Bay Area Houston is a boater's heaven. In the city itself, Houston is also a great place for the avid cyclist. In addition to more than 80 miles of trails found in city parks, the Houston Bikeway Program provides 345 miles of designated bikeways, spanning a 500 square mile area throughout the city. Close to downtown, Buffalo Bayou offers a 52-mile, slow-moving waterway for canoes and kayaks. One of the stops along the Bayou, Memorial Park, features tennis courts and six miles of recreational trails, perfect for hiking and biking. Nature abounds on the western edge of Memorial Park where it meets up with 155-acre Houston Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
