Battleship Texas and San Jacinto Monument and Museum

As a memorial to the battle that defeated the Mexican army on April 21, 1836, the San Jacinto Monument and Museum offers 1,200-acres of historical reflection on the very battle ground where Santa Anna was defeated. An on-site museum of history with collections spanning over 400-years of early Texas history is located on monument grounds. Established as a memorial for the Heroes of the Battle of San Jacinto and all others who contributed to the independence of Texas, the San Jacinto monument is a 570-foot pillar crowned by a 34-foot star -- a symbol of the Lone Star Republic. Adjacent to the monument is a 8.4-acre reflection pool. Visitors are welcome to ride the monument's internal elevator up 489 feet to an observation deck for a bird's eye view of the historical battleground.

Permanently docked near Houston's San Jacinto Monument, the Battleship Texas -- decommissioned in 1948 -- assumes the role of a battleship museum and floating memorial. War history fanatics and excited visitors are welcome to step forward for an up-close look at one of the Navy's most seasoned war veterans. As one of the only two existing battleships to have served in both World Wars, the floating museum is open for in-depth guided tours by appointment.
