Lesbian/Gay Bars

Houston puts on the biggest Pride Parade in the Southwest, and it's no slouch for partying the rest of the year. Most of the bar circuit is within a few blocks in the Montrose neighborhood. For example, girls who like girls will find four bars to like 'em in under one roof at Chances on Westheimer: There you can mingle with hip martini-sippers at the Chi Chi, dance to pumpin' beats at the G Spot, boot-scoot at the New Barn, or sip and relax at the Chances itself. Gays and friends, both local and far flung, tend to end up eventually at Marys Lounge, a longtime Houston institution -- also on Westheimer -- to smoke a stogie and check out the famously scandalous murals and window art. The crowd at Mary's is mixed and relaxed. If you're a guy who likes to see and be seen, station yourself in a prominent spot at JRs Bar and Grill on Pacific Street, three blocks north of Westheimer. Get a few drinks in you, and you might even find yourself on stage on JR's well-attended karaoke or amateur strip nights. If you're looking for a hot dance and cruising scene for men -- and women, too, on weekends -- belly up to one of the two bars at the South Beach (also on Pacific Street). If you don't want to dance yourself, you can always watch the pretty-boy dancers or the video screens. Leatherfolk will want to check out the Ripcord, on Fairview five blocks off Westheimer. It's been in service to the community for several decades, definitely qualifying it as old leather. And if this mini-tour is not enough for you, there's plenty more to search out in Montrose.
