Rothko Chapel

Named after Mark Rothko, one of America's most important artists of the mid-20th century, the Rothko Chapel is a sanctuary for people of all beliefs and backgrounds. Located in Houston's Museum District, this unique chapel functions as a museum, forum, and a meditative center. Commissioned by Dominique and John de Menil to create a sacred place of worship, Rothko worked closely with the original architect, Philip Johnson, and then Howard Barnstone and Eugene Aubry, who completed the building in 1971, shortly after Rothko's death. The chapel incorporates 14 of Rothko's original paintings, and facing the chapel is "The Broken Obelisk," a sculpture created by Barnett Newman and dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legendary artists, leaders, musicians, scholars and scientists from around the world have come to the Rothko Chapel to share their stories and wisdom, including Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Huston Smith, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and the Dalai Lama. Free and open to the public, this spiritual landmark is a favorite destination for art lovers, scholars, students, and people of all faiths.
