Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

Non-collecting and not for profit, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston is not your typical museum. This world-renowned museum is dedicated to presenting exciting and unique international, national and regional art of the last 40 years, with an emphasis on avant-garde visual art. Major one-person shows at the Contemporary Arts Museum have included Roy Lichtenstein, Ann Hamilton, Brian Eno, Chuck Close, Lari Pittman, and Robert Rauschenberg. Just about the only work of art that stays with the museum is the memorable building itself -- a striking stainless steel trapezoid in the city's Museum District -- built by award-winning architect Gunnar Birkerts. In addition to its exhibitions, lectures, and original publications, the museum also hosts a wide array of educational programs and events that are designed to introduce contemporary arts and artists to children, teens, and adults. With a mission to engage visitors in a lively dialogue with today's art, the museum is free and open to the public.
