Midtown
Built at the turn of the 20th century as Houston's second neighborhood, Southside place, now known as the Midtown district, is located just south of downtown Houston and adjacent to the Texas Medical Center. The neighborhood was constructed of single family Victorian homes built for the wealthy founding families of the Humble Oil & Refinery Company. When oil production abated in the 1980s, this once thriving area gave way to vacant land and boarded up buildings. For the last decade, the neighborhood has been engaged in a successful revitalization effort that has turned Midtown into one of the hippest places to live, work and play.

For those who like to walk, this pedestrian-friendly neighborhood is prized for it's accessible location to downtown Houston. Not only are there three METRORail stations in Midtown, the district also hosts Houston's intercity bus station and is surrounded by freeways, making it an easy place to kickoff or end your journey. Midtown is also home to Little Saigon, an area populated with Vietnamese and Vietnamese Americans, along with many tasty Vietnamese eateries and fun shops. Or for a taste of local flavor, hit up Midtown's Tafia restaurant (3701 Travis St.), which promotes "garden-to-table" dining, and check out Midtown's flourishing Farmer's Market (3701 Travis St). And once work ends and the sun sets, Midtown residents take to the streets to enjoy the district's fine array of casual bars, pubs, and lounges.
