Lakewood Church - Upper Kirby District
The Greenway Plaza stands out as the first completely planned residential-business-commercial district in Houston, a city that has proudly expanded for over a century without zoning regulations or land-use planning. Most businesses here are connected by a coordinated system of bridges, tunnels, and covered walkways. This area also hosts (and toasts) Tonys, one of the city's most celebrated restaurants (3755 Richmond Ave.), and the now famous Lakewood Church -- a sports arena turned non-denominational church. The church (7317 E Houston Rd.) is the largest non-denominational church in the nation, and home to a variety of concerts, conferences, sports events, and conventions throughout the year.

The Upper Kirby District, located just east of Greenway Plaza, was claimed and named in 1988 by the neighborhood's families and business owners. For the past 20 years, the community has focused on beautifying their once nameless district through outreach projects, and by hosting special events and improving transportation to the area. Here you'll find the Upper Kirby/Intown Visitors Center (3273B Southwest Freeway), where friendly and helpful volunteers will gladly answer all of your questions about the neighborhood's hotspots, dining delights, and attractions.

In Kirby and Greenway, your taste buds will lead you to a rich and diverse dining selection, as these areas host more restaurants than any other district in Houston. If you're in the mood for traditional Texas eats, stop by the Goode Company Texas Barbecue (5109 Kirby Dr.), which proudly serves the best smoked brisket in Texas. After a hearty meal, head over to the Edwards Theatres Grand Palace Stadium (3839 Weslayan St.), and catch a show as you digest. These theatres have been playfully decorated with British paraphernalia as a salute to Kirby's mostly-British developers.
