Located 30 miles from downtown Houston, Katy Texas has become one of the city's fastest growing suburbs. Once a major sugar cane producer, the major attraction now is the Katy Mills Outlet Mall. In addition to this major shopping center and the half-complete LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch, two more major developments are in the works for the near future: The Village of Katy, a shopping and business center, and the West Grand Promenade

Though what recommends Katy Mills to the visitor is the extensive outlet shopping that boast of some of the best names in retail-- Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet, Bass Pro Shops, Outdoor World, and Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, to name a few. Visitors interested in Chinese history will find a world-class exhibit that recreates the Forbidden City and the tomb of the first emperor of China, Emperor, Qin. The exhibit encompasses 40 acres and includes an outdoor educational museum along with buildings, landmarks, and monuments on a recreated walled-in capital that envisions the mysterious past of the Middle Kingdom.

Katy Mills has an unusually high number of historical/heritage museums, including The Katy Heritage Museum (6202 George Bush Dr.), or the City of Katy Railroad Park and Railroad Museum (5615 First St.).The Wildlife Habitat and Aviary (Bear Creek Park 3535 War Memorial Dr.), with its menagerie of peacocks, bison, emus, birds of prey and other creatures, might be a option for visitors traveling with children, as is the interactive Folk Life Festival at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning Center (6301 S. Stadium Ln.), for those who want to experience life on the prairie from a hundred years ago.

As an interesting side bar, this little corner of Texas has an unusually high proportion of famous natives, including actors Billy Bob Thorton, Janeane Garofalo, Renee Zellweger, singer Clint Black, and Roger Clemens, to name just a few.
